Fees and funding

As well as student loans to cover fees and maintenance, you may also be entitled to a University bursary or scholarship to support you through your studies.

The Beatrice Shilling Scholarship

This scholarship is open to UK fee-paying students who are women and who hold an offer to study an undergraduate engineering course for September 2023. The subjects included are:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

We're offering twenty awards of £3,000 for the first year of study and a further £1,000 per year up to year four.

There is no separate application form as recipients for the award will be considered based on the UCAS application.

If you're successful, you'll be notified by the 7 April after an offer of study has been made. To accept this scholarship, you'll be required to make the engineering course at Manchester your firm choice via UCAS. The scholarship will be confirmed once all offer conditions have been met. 

To be considered for this scholarship, you need to:

  • Be a woman (inclusive of trans women) / be assigned female at birth (e.g., AFAB non-binary).
  • Have an offer of study for an undergraduate engineering course at The University of Manchester, commencing September 2023.
  • Have chosen Manchester as your firm choice by the June UCAS deadline.
  • Commit to contributing to outreach and recruitment activities, especially encouraging more women to study engineering.
  • Achieve a minimum of 60% average performance during each year of study.

Scholarships will be awarded to the highest performing applicants or those with the highest potential to attain based on their UCAS application within each engineering discipline (at least two students per discipline).

The Tallow Chandlers' Benevolent Fund

The Tallow Chandlers Company is a charity that focuses on the edible fats, oil and lighting industries. Like the University itself, Tallow Chandlers are proud of their focus on scholarships to students who might not otherwise be able to continue with their education.
